Cover Songs

Our budding and ever developing singer/songwriter son posted a couple bars of a newly written song. It was incredibly vulnerable and beautiful and I was sorta surprised he put it out there.

24 hours later and we get a video of his big brother from across the country. He had picked up his own guitar and covered his brother’s new song.

Andy and I both speechless.

Both renditions were beautiful.

My heart immediately recognized the significance of what it means to cover a song.

We are all too familiar with the heart of the artists around here…whether in song or word…it takes such bravery to express your innermost workings.

You never really know if you’re the only one that feels the way you do. If you’re the only one to struggle the way you do.

Then you put it out there.

And someone covers your song.

It’s the epitome of a “you are not alone” and “I see you” and “me too.”

It’s why art resonates and we replay and reread our favorite songs and poems and books over and over.

The loneliness in me sees the loneliness in the artist. The hope hidden in me recognizes the hope hidden in the artist. We pick up the longings of the writer and recognize that they are ours too.

It is connnection.

It is reinterpretations of universal human experiences.

It is a brotherhood that says I am not going to let you feel alone in this for one more minute.

Because me too.

I got you.

You are covered.

Can’t help but think of the other context in which we see the ultimate manifestation of covering.

A God who takes on human form in life and death.

Demonstarted in the literal defintion of atonement, "to cover over."

Every mistake. Every tear. Every defeat.

Covered over by the blood of Jesus who says:

“Not for one more minute will you be alone in this”

I got you.

You are covered.
